HonourSG x The Birthday Collective #Unconference 2022. During this conference, we explored the theme of “Exploring one’s passion and interest through active volunteerism and social work.” The discussion focused on several key questions:

1. Are schools “forcing” volunteerism and social work on students?
2. What are the benefits of volunteerism and social work?
3. What impact do social workers and volunteers have on Singapore’s continued development?

In Singapore, students have greatly benefited from the education system, which places emphasis on both academic curriculum and holistic development. One example of this is the Values-in-Action (VIA) programme, which encourages students to engage in meaningful community service.

I also had the opportunity to network with Ms Shiao-yin Kuik, Executive Director and Cultural Change Strategist at Common Ground Civic Centre & Consultancy. Through our conversation, I gained valuable insights into how organisations and youth can be empowered to create meaningful social impact for themselves and for Singapore.

In addition, Professor Lim Siong Guan shared his perspectives on social issues in Singapore and highlighted how young people can contribute meaningfully to addressing these challenges.

This experience broadened my understanding of volunteerism, social development, and the importance of active youth participation in shaping Singapore’s future.

As someone who is passionate about volunteerism and community engagement, I strongly believe that giving back to society is an important responsibility. I hope more youths in Singapore will be inspired to take part in initiatives that create positive change within their communities.

I am grateful to have been part of this meaningful experience.
